Why Do We Travel?
I have been incredibly fortunate that my camera has taken me on so many adventures. But I know from personal experience that journeys can come in all forms. Whether we are travelling from one village to another to be with friends or family, or voyaging to the other side of the world to explore some far off land, we are all almost always on one journey or another.
And yet, if we are honest, there is very little glamorous about travelling. Yes, I know it is often portrayed in a very glamorous way, but the reality of modern travel is often a stress-inducing, sleep-depriving, confusion-inciting endeavour of running for flights, trying to keep everyone happy in the car, or just keeping the wheels of our bicycle in a straight line. And yet, we keep doing it.
The question is, why? What lies behind this almost irresistible urge to travel? I think the answer is simply to find a connection with whatever is out there. As a species, we have been travelling since the moment we were able to stand on two legs. Our distant ancestors traversed the continents and crossed the oceans before they could routinely start a fire — travel is in our DNA.
We travel because it is who we are.
